Kirkkaita vesiä, arkoja junia osa 4 (Clear waters & timid trains part 4)

Martin Brodista alavirtaan seuraava kalapaikka on ns.

Day 4. Una & Unac

On Friday we decided to take the advice from Asmir and fish the Una area. This time our fishing would concentrate to Martin Brod area where Unac comes to Una. This time the targeted fish would be rainbow and brown instead of grayling. In martin Brod area, rainbows and browns are the majority in fishes.

We woke up to breakfast high spirited a little later than usual. The forecast had promised hard rain for whole area, but as we had made such a long trip here, we were determined to go fishing. For breakfast Asmir and his wife had prepared a tasty bacon omelette, which would give us some strength for todays fishing. Asmir told in the breakfast table that the biggest fish he had hooked on Una, was in Martin Brod, where Unac meets Una. He said this fish was nearly 6kg brown trout.

When we got to Martin Brod my fishing plans were done. I would fish with a sink-3 line equipped with streamer. Near the Martin Brod area is very nice looking, and the rains hadn’t come despite the forecasts. The weather was quite nice. Cloudy weather with +15 celsius. I started fishing right under the bridge where Unac goes as one stream, leaving a deep countercurrent to the side. With almost every cast, there was some small rainbow trout. The rainbows had fled the fish farm at very early stage, and now they had grown to 24-30 cm. Because we got only the small ones, we decided to move downstream.

The next place downstream from Martin Brod is so called picnic area, where Unac again goes as a one stream, leaving deep pockets to each side. I Fished this area with my muddler and caught some small ones, and as I moved downstream, I got contacts from some greater fish. Really nice strikes came to streamer for some times, and some even broke my tippet after striking. Without caring of these strikes, I continued to walk towards place, where Unac and Una meets, which by the way, looked really, reallu nice for bigger fish. In this area I served fish, some nymph, dryflies, different kinds of streamers, but the fish showed no response, even though there for sure was some great ones.

When I was near a bombed bridge, Lauri found me and told that he had hooked 3 nice rainbows and 1 trout., I only had strikes, so we decided to move to take a look from the bombed bridge. We did indeed find some nice fish, on a sand reef downstream from the bombed bridge, where some nicely sized fish were touring.  We went to the only place on the other side of the river where we could make casts anywhere near the reef. Place was really hard to cast, and Lauri made some traditional bottom-to-tree casts, leaving some flies hanging. and I too lost some flies to the bottom. Frustrated from this, we decided to go back to our car to have some snack and enjoy a bottle of beer.

After snack, we decided to try to find a new spot for fishing. and Eve was walking towards us from Kulen Vakuf so we went by car and took Eve aboard from the road.. Driving downstream we did find some  nice-looking place, but it proved to be too challenging with deep bank edges and hard current. The day was also turning to it’s end, so we went back to Vila Nana to enjoy a four star dinner.

Tapasimme Amirin huoltoasemalla sovittuun aikaan josta jatkoimme matkaa kohti paikallista jokikahvilaa.
Amirin perhot erottuivat omistamme pitkälti perhojen kapeuden perusteella.

Kiitos!

Day 5.Una, Unique waterfalls, and professional help for our fishing.

On Friday dinner, we asked Asmir about the local fishing tackle shop located in Bihac, 45 minutes away. We had run out of thin tippet lines, and we thought it would be nice to try some local flies to improve our fishing. Asmir told that he would call his trusted guide, Amir to meet us on a gas station before Bihac, where Amir would give us some tips for fishing and sell his trusted flies to us. At first we were a bit skeptic of this, but agreed that Asmir had been right before.

We met Amir at the gas-station at agreed time, where we continued to local river café. In the café Amir told us how he became a guide, showed some flies for Una and instructed some techniques. Amir was quite convincing and gave information about Una , flies and himself very freely. Amir seemed really eager and professional and I couldn’t see no doubt, that he’s a good, professional guide. Bad thing was, that he was already reserved for our last fishing day. After this he took us to the fishing tackle shop, where we bought some tippets, By my request, Amir also went to get his streamer box as I had planned to buy some from him. From Amir’s fly collection we took a nice amount of flies, mostly nymphs, but also streamers and dry flies. Amir’s flies differentiated from ours by narrowness, and weight combined. In chapter tree, there is a picture where few Amir’s flies are represented, the best ones thoug are either in the stomach of the fish, or in the bottom.

Afted educating trip to Bihac, we stopped in the way to see the amazing waterfalls of Strbacki Buk. Because a picture tells a thousand words, you’ll be able to see some pics in the end of this post.

1:30pm  We come to Kulen Vakuf flyfishing area. This time with brand new flies and some good tips. I start my fishing on the spot where canal meets una. I cast few casts with Amirs streamer, and in no time the fish were biting to it like the hell itself broke loose. Good flies. This time I Used sink-3 line to get my flies near the bottom as the water had risen 60cm from the first time. It really didn’t seemed to bother the fishes, as with new flies I got 3 rainbows fairly quickly ashore. After losing another streamer to the bottom, I figured I should try Amir’s nymphs. First czech nymphing to the spot and a grayling, a bit over 40cm was on its way ashore. Eve came to same spot, and after I guided him the technique to the spot, Eve was landing her first rainbow. Lauri also came and in no time had some nice fishes. Altogether, we got numerous fish from the spot till the dusk came. Amazing day, it was a pleasure to go to Asmir to tell the great news and of course, to get a tasty dinner for the last time.

Day 6. Wonderful weather at Unac and the long awaited trains.

After breakfast we packed our things because our time at Vila Nana was to end. We told Asmir that we would go to Unac for the last time with our gun’s a-blazing, and after would come to fetch our things and tell some good news if there is some.

The weather in Martin Brod was fine. the clouds covered the sky but there was no rain. For first place we rushed to the picnic area, which would be a fine choice with this high water level. We had a hot spot for fishing and decided to change everytime, when a man gets a fish. We started well, though the feeding wasn’t clearly on its best. We did still get some nicely sized graylings and trouts from the spot. Lauri was quickly bored to the place and went to upper part of picnic area. maybe 10 minutes later, Lauri rushed back to me shouting; “DIdn’t you hear me shouting??” I answered “no, did you have a good fish on?” Lauri replied “I had a fish that went downstream like a bullet, it showed itself on the surface and I guarantee it was thiiiis big!!!”. At first I was a bit sceptical if the fish really was that big, but Lauri soon went back and this time I heard the shouts, the big fish was hooked again and went its own ways with Amirs flies on its mouth. I can’t really translate what lauri said, but the censored version was something like this; #¤#%¤%!?!?!?!”%¤%¤
I soon tried the place myself but I didn’t get any touches with the fish. On my way back to the hotspot. Lauri was coming from the spot with a beautiful 48,1cm grayling. After some pics from the grayling I went to fish the hotspot again, and in no time, I was shouting to Lauri that for fuck’s sakes come to shoot, I have a HUGE fish on!! From the spot came a 4 to 5 kg rainbowto the surface and started to take my line like a train downstream. I let a video explain how this turned out. A link is foun at the end of this post.
We fished the same spot but all we got was the “small” 35-43 cm rainbows and graylings. We had a drive to Zagreb to do so we decided to end our fishing with a thought “We have to come to this place again”

We went back to Vila Nana to fetch our stuff, where also Amir had come with some customers. We thanked them both, especially Asmir for his tremendous hospitality. And once more in the way, we saluted this mighty, beautiful river and it’s monsters.

General information about flyfishing in Bosnia

Kirkkaita vesiä, arkoja junia osa 3 (Clear waters & timid trains part 3)

Päivä 3, Torstai. Bosnia, Una

Hetki kului ennenkuin Lauri huuti ensimmäisen harjuksen olevan kiinni.

Rantapenkkaa pitkin paikalle kainostelematta tuli paikallinen kaveri parin vanhuksen kera. Pieni hetki meni, ennenkuin ymmärsin kaverin olevan paikallinen opas, Ado, joka tunnetaan flyfishing in bosnia -sivun keulahahmona.

Ajoimme kinttupolkua Martin brodiin päin kunnes tulimme alueelle jossa hieno vanha silta meni vuorenrinteeltä toiselle laakson yli.

"Miikka, I had so much trust in you" Noh, vakuuttelin että kyllä se kalastus tästä paranee, sillä huonommaksi se ei osaltani ainakaan voinut mennä.

Noh, Huomenna paremmin.

Päätimme illan jälleen ruoan merkeissä kun Asmir tarjoili meille jälleen kerran kolmen ruokalajin illallisen joka maistui aivan kuten eilenkin, herkulliselta

Day 3, Thursday. Bosnia, river Una

On Wednesday evening we get to accommodate in Vila Nana in Kulen Vakuf where our host Asmir welcomed us with three-course dinner, which was in a word; Delicious. He told us that he was a little bit worried of incoming rains, which could force our fishing just to rivers Una and Unac. Asmir told us that the other, smaller rivers could turn unfishable, when such hard rains are to come.
Thursday morning started perfectly as Asmir had prepared us a wonderful breakfast at wanted time, and in the same time told us a little about fishing in Una. The water level at Una in Kulen Vakuf area was perfect so far, and the that came in the night hadn’t  affected the color or water levels. Because of the rain, Asmir highlighted that the fishing would be bet to do with nymphs or streamers. We took the advice and bought permits for Una in Kulen Vakuf area. We went to withdraw some local money from the post-office, and in this drive, Asmir showed me some hotspots for Kulen Vakuf area. He also gave some local flies to Lauri’s girlfriend Eve, as she had only a little bit experience of fly fishing

The weather did not flatter us on our first day at Bosnia, as it was pouring cats and dogs. The temperature had dropped from Gacka’s +27 to +10 degrees in Kulen Vakuf. We still experience a lot of this kind of weather in Finland, so we didin’t let it bother so we put our nymphs to end of our lines. Asmir told that the Kulen Vakuf area was rich in grayling with some rainbows and browns. We decided to target the grayling for today, but with good flies, you can cathch even something else.

We went up from Kulen Vakuf bridge because there was the largest hotspot area Asmir had told us. This area was quite shallow with only 1,5m on deppest pockets. Only minutes go by before Lauri was holding his first grayling. Lauri got numerous graylings from the hotspot, but for some reason I had difficulties catching even my first one. I only had one fish on my line, and even that one fled. I moved down from the bridge where a canal join the river from the village and where was some deeper water. Here I found that just where the canal meets the river,  was a lot of rainbowns, a quick count of 20, from which the biggest one was nearing 2 kilos. At this spot I decided to put streamer to the end of my line and had some strikes coming to them immediately. I got few rainbows which in Una river, are really strong goers. I was to fish longer in this spot, but an unexpected guest came to my spot.

Walking down the bank to my spot came a local guide with some old dudes. A while went before I understood that the guide was Ado, the figurehead of flyfishing in bosnia –site. He asked me politely how my fishing was and where were we staying etc. I showed him my flyboxes and asked what should I put to end of my line. The answer was short; none of these flies is fit for Una. He advised me to use atleast 2m long tippet of 0.10 monofil and gave me one thin nymph sized #16 . At this point I had a tippet of 22 feet, from where 12 was 0.10 thin monofil. He also asked me what technique I use for nymphing? I answered the Czech style. This wasn’t the answer he wanted to hear, as he hated techniques which doesn’t include using flyline, but merely leaders and heavy nymphs.

He showed a technique where one could fish with lighter nymphs in a quite deep water “easily” and even further away, if casting skills allow it. In this technique, the cast is made 75 degrees upstream with a floating line. then sink the fly with letting the line and fly go freely in the stream. When the fly goes freely in the stream, must one make a curve to flyline, and let the floating line lift the nymph from the bottom, so one could imitate a rising nymph. The strikes should be noticed from the line, which makes incorrect moves or stops when the fish takes the fly. He demonstrated the technique with my own set. Two cast, two nicely sized grayling striking the fly. I was convinced. I tried this technique a lot but found that it’s not that easy to spot the strikes of the fish.  It needs much practice to get this technique to work, and in such a short guiding, I couldn’t make it work for me. In the upper parts Lauri used Czech nymphing technique with great skill. he had hooked over 15 fish, mostly graylings, and biggest was around 45cm. He also met a French guide, who advised us to go to upper parts where should be some bigger fish. In  Kulen Vakuf area was also a bit crowdy as the  guides dragged in some old flyfishermen with their wading staffs, so we took the advice and headed  up the river.

We drove a bad road heading to Martin Brod, until we came to a place where beautiful old bridge crosses a valley on the other side. The place was absolutely beautiful and we understood why the romans had named the river Una (the one and only) and this was just the spot where the french guide told Lauri to come. The spot was however challenign, it was deep from the edges, with shallower water in the middle. down from this spot Lauri did find some nice way to a reef where he spotted and hooked some rainbows. I tried to improve the technique Ado showed, but with no results.
Todays results:Lauri 24 fish, Me 2 fish, and Eve 0

As we came back to Vila Nana, our host Asmir was already expecting us and the results we got. My own result seemed be as big disappointment to Asmir as it was for me. “Miikka, I had so much trust in you.” Well I assured Asmir that my fishing will get better in the following days, because it couldn’t go much worse, as there was so much fish the river. These fish however need their own little thing to get them hooked.

Asmir also told us that our plans to Ribnik next tomorrow were not so good, as the water in ribnik in this heavy rain would came to look like café latte, with water level rising approximately 60cm. This would mean really bad fishing. Una however, as a regions largest river, would maintain clear colour and has some nice spots even with high water level.
In the evening we pondered what was different between me and Lauri’s fishing. The answer was quite clear; I used 0.14mm tippets which were too thick when fishing in slow currents, and Lauri used 0.12mm . Well,
tomorrow is a brand new day.

Like yesterday, we ended our day with Three-course-dinner which was again, delicious.

Kirkkaita vesiä, arkoja junia osa 2 (Clear waters & timid trains part 2)

Päivä 3. Keskiviikko

Kiitos Gacka

Day 3, Wednesday
Results of the previous day were quite low compared to the amount of fish in the river, and no bigger fish were spotted, the biggest being around 2 kg. Today we were determined to find and fish the bigger fishes of Gacka.

We started moving from curve before bridge n. 5, where was some nice stream and few fishes feeding. After we had our equipment ready we spotted some fishes feeding just outside the parking lot in the curve, but once we got our lines to water, the fish scattered away. This curve however seemed to have a lot of potential; a lot of deep pockets and shallow water with stronger and weaker stream, so everything a fishermen can ask, but without active fish. There were some fish feeding, but always too far. We fished on this spot for some time without any bites, so we began to move upstream, and after some walking, Lauri did spot some reasonably sized trout in the backwater and and we played rock-paper-scissors for which one of us would get to fish this fish. Lauri won this one so he was the one to fish that one. I moved ahead with hopes of finding THE fish.

After a while Lauri came from downstream and told me that as he got his fly to the water, the fish swam away. Fish really were extremely timid and careful so we would be extremely cautious when next time approaching fishes. Before in the upper parts we would be able to stand very near of the fishes without them being disturbed. We continued to walk upstream. We walked for a long time along the backwater without spotting any serious fishing spots. Little by little the amount of the fish seemed to get better. along the way we found a nice bit shallower stream were some +40 cm fish were feeding. A little bit wiser from before, we now approached the fishes a lot more carefully to minimize the scare effect. Still we seemed not to be careful enough, as the fishes retreated away from casting distances. At this point is good to mention that most of Gacka is very easy to walk in the riverbank as it runs mostly on a meadow. Now however we came to a spot where thick Croatian forest meets the sharply deepening Gacka. With a stiff grip from the tree branches however helped us past this challenging spot with only wetting our backpacks and wading jackets. When approaching the bridge n. 3 the amount of the fish seemed to get better along the way, but still the BIG fishes were hiding somewhere.

Near the bridge n. 3 we caught some nice trouts with nymphs, biggest being somewhere around 50cm. When approaching the bridge n. 2 we found a perfect place for dry fly fishing. A calm stream with under 2m of crystal clear water, lots of fish feeding with caddis and few stoneflies. There was a incoming caddis hatching in the banks, waiting for a perfect time to go to lay eggs to water and of course, to be eaten by some trouts. At this spot we hooked  trouts nicely with caddis imitations, but many many times fish noticed the hoax and turned the other cheek. On this spot the smaller fishes usually were kind of robbers and were on the run whole time, catching flies in the front of big ones and the swimming for their lives as big ones were really irritated about them.
A sheep farmer also came to watch our fishing, though we didn't really understand each other at all, we seemed to have a mutual feeling about the fishes; They are of great value and gives you a piece of mind. The sun was starting to set, and as we had to drive to bosnia, we decided to stop fishing and show our appreciation to this beautiful river. Thank you, Gacka

Lopuksi vielä video ruokailevasta taimenesta gackalla.

Kirkkaita vesiä, arkoja junia osa 1 (Clear waters & timid trains part 1)

Monday night, slight hangover from my friends wedding, and one of the most staggering trip ahead; a flight to Zagreb, Croatia, where we would travel first to Gacka river in Croatia and secondly to different rivers in beautiful Bosnia. The atmosphere on the flight was both fearful and expectant, as forecast had promised hard rain to whole Balkan area that could change totally the fishing and the nature of the rivers

Päivä 1, maanantai

Saavuin Zagrebin lentokentälle, missä kaverini olivat jo odottamassa vuokra-auton kanssa. Menopeliksi matkalle l,ähti mukaan uudehko Opel Corsa. Lähdimme majoittumaan kaverini tykö jossa kävimme tulevan reissun aikataulua läpi ystävämme oluen kanssa. Tässä vaiheessa suunnitelma oli selkeä; kaksi seuraavaa päivää Gacka -joella, keskiviikkoiltana Bosniaan majoittumaan Vila Nanaan, Kulen Vakufiin, Torstaina kalastusta Una -joella Kulen Vakufissa, perjantaina Ribnik, ja lauantaina Unac. Sunnuntain käyttäisimme näistä parhaalla joella revanssin merkeissä.
Sääennusteet kertoivat kuitenkin sateiden alkavan keskiviikkoiltana, joten päätimme myös antaa paikallisten neuvoille tilaa suunnitelmissa.

Day 1, monday

I arrived to Zagreb airport, where my friends were already waiting for me in a rental car, which was supposed to carry us along the trip. The car was a quite new Opel Corsa. We went to my friends house, where we discussed the schedule of the trip with our friend, Beer. At this point the schedule was fairly clear; tuesday and wednesday at Gacka River, after wednesdays fishing we'd move to our accommodation in Bosnia, Vila Nana in Kulen Vakuf. Thursday we'd fish Una river in Kulen vakuf, friday river Ribnik and saturday river Unac. Sunday we'd spent in the best river of these. The weather forecast told that the rain would start on wednesday, so we gave some slack in the schedule for the advices of the locals.

Tämän jälkeen kalastimme sillan yläpuolella olevaa nivaa josta löytyi useampia kirjolohia, edellisten tapaan, nämä kuitenkin näyttivät meille pitkää naamaa. Lähdimme ennen pimeää kulkemaan vielä toista puolta jokea, josta lauri löyti yhden perusmittaisen taimenen haavin pohjalle.

Day 2, tuesday.

We packed our car early in the morning and headed to a city called Otocac, where we would find  a river named Gacka. The weather seemed nice with clear skies and a forecast for +25 celsius. Once we reached the river we were amazed. River Gacka is crystal clear and browns were feeding with caddis's in the surface. This kind of fishing you won't see in Finland.

We bought the permits from an info point located near a bridge, and the clerk advised us that the best fishing places are located 1 km up and downstream from the infobooth. We also picked some local flies from the booth to improve our fishing. We ready our equipment and before I even reached the river, my friend Lauri was with his first dryfly trout from Gacka. As i had experience with Balkanese rivers, I put Mudler minnow to the end of my line and with only a few casts to the edge of a stream, the first +40cm brown was on it's way  to ashore. When fishing the river downstream, the bigger browns were merely toying with our dryflies and having the real deal for dinner. By the morning we'd already learned that when casting dryflies or nymphs, the flies shan't skim even slightly, but should go freely or as a dead weight to the bottom.

As the clock was nearly 2 pm, we would have to go to see the host of our accommodation and also some local food to fill our stomachs. reserved accommodation was located only kilometer away from Gacka river and was quite cheap, only ~10 € / person.
After accommodating we headed back to the river, this time up from the bridge. We started to seek any twinkles and fish in the bottom for fishing and after found we tried to cathc these fish. The fish however had turned rather passive due to caddis hatchings end and the fishing turned really hard.

In these upper parts we also started to find more rainbow trouts but like the other fish, they generally turned their cheeks when facing our flies. I started to walk up the riverbank to find some active fish all away to Hotel Gacka, which was mostly deep backwater. Near Hotel Gacka is a walking bridge where i was able to spot some nice fishes laying between weeds. When Lauri arrived at same spot i told what I had seen in the water (without catching anything) and Lauri went almost straight away to the bridge to show these fish some of finnish larvae flies. Some of the fish accepted Lauri's flies but Lauri wasn't able to net them. I figured that i should test my trustworthy companion, mudler minnow to the fish above the bridge. Some fish tried my fly a few times before I got to hook it, but after 30 seconds of giving pressure, the brown decided to go it's own ways. We fished up from the walking bridge and spotted some nice rainbows, but like the others, they weren't amused by our flies. Before the dawn we decided to fish the other side of the river when alking back to our car and on this walk, Lauri caught one beautiful trout with a brown nymph.
